Sisyphus Reimagined: An Absurdist Urban Myth of Isolation and Alienation
2024
This project, titled "Sisyphus Reimagined," is a deeply personal exploration set within a digital narrative framework, reflecting my psychological state and perspective on digitalized urban living. It delves into themes of alienation and isolation in an absurd and indifferent urban environment, reinterpreting the myth of Sisyphus to probe the quest for meaning in modern urban life. Integrating environmental storytelling and passive gameplay, the project offers an immersive experience that resonates with my introspections on urban existence. Integrating film noir aesthetics with interactive design, "Sisyphus Reimagined" not only investigates existential and metaphysical themes but also serves as a reflective medium, mirroring my contemplations on the digitalized urban lifestyle and its impact on the human psyche.
In the design and reflective process of "Sisyphus Reimagined," a multifaceted approach was employed to create a rich and layered digital narrative. The methodology included narrative analysis, which juxtaposed a cyclical digital narrative against the enduring themes of alienation, isolation, and the Sisyphus myth, providing a foundation for the story's development. Environmental storytelling was crucial, allowing the digital environment—through its design elements and interactive components—to articulate the narrative and themes subtly and effectively.
The project also involved a thematic analysis, film screening to support design choices, a comparative analysis between the reimagined and original Sisyphus story, and user experience analysis to understand how passive gameplay influences user engagement and perception. A constructivist approach to production facilitated iterative design and experiential learning, ensuring the artifact reflected a deep understanding of the explored themes.
Moreover, the project was underpinned by a broad spectrum of theories, including existentialism, absurdism, urban sociology, and metaphysics, which informed the narrative structure and message-making. The integration of design and aesthetic analysis, multimodality, film studies, game studies, and semiotics provided a comprehensive framework for the artifact's development. The ultimate goal was to represent an identity that informs an understanding of selfhood, engage users, innovate storytelling, and contribute to the broader discourse, reflecting a deeply personal and reflective journey into digital urban existence.
